Vimeo OTT vs Direct Film Sales: Which Fits Your Release?

Vimeo OTT and a direct film storefront can both charge viewers for video, but they are designed for different businesses. Vimeo OTT is aimed at operating a video service with transactional or subscription content and optional branded apps. A film storefront is a focused destination for selling a finished title to people the filmmaker can reach.

Vimeo OTT is also different from Vimeo On Demand, which Vimeo is shutting down in 2026.

Choose Vimeo OTT when you are building a service

Vimeo OTT is the more natural candidate when you have multiple titles or recurring programming, need subscription billing, expect to manage members over time, or have a business case for branded apps.

The key question is whether viewers are subscribing to a continuing promise. One finished film rarely creates that promise by itself.

Choose a direct storefront when the product is the film

A storefront fits when the film is complete, you hold the rights, people already ask where to watch, and you want one branded page with a price, checkout, and stream. It avoids building a catalog business when the immediate job is completing one release.

TribuShare serves this use case. Its current pricing is a film plan at $14.99 a month for the first live film (the founding price for the first 50 filmmakers, kept for life, then $24.99 for those who come after), $4.99 for each extra film, and 10% plus $0.50 per sale, with 4K streaming included. A custom domain comes with the Website plan. Stripe processing, taxes, and refunds are separate.

TribuShare does not provide native apps, subscription memberships, or discovery. The filmmaker sends viewers to the page.

If you are leaving Vimeo On Demand

Do not assume Vimeo OTT is the automatic replacement. Export the records and assets available to you, review promises made to buyers, and choose the next product based on the job. Our Vimeo On Demand migration checklist covers the shutdown dates and steps.

If you have a growing catalog and recurring audience, evaluate OTT. If you have a completed film and a reachable audience, evaluate a storefront. If you need placement on third-party services, neither one replaces an aggregator or distributor.

The broader 2026 distribution landscape guide maps those alternatives without treating them as interchangeable platforms.
